1 Put it on your phone

You don't get TringTring from an app store. You open a link, then save it to your phone so it works like a normal app.

On an iPhone:

1. Open your setup link in Safari.
2. Tap the Share button (the square with an arrow going up).
3. Tap Add to Home Screen.
4. Now open TringTring from the new icon — not from Safari.

On an Android phone:

1. Open your setup link in Chrome.
2. If a little Install message pops up, tap it. If not, tap the menu (three dots) and choose Install app or Add to Home screen.
3. Open TringTring from the new icon.

2 Keep your setup link (important for iPhones)

Your setup link is the link that logs you in. Save it somewhere you won't lose it — copy it into your Notes, or message it to yourself.

Every so often an iPhone "forgets" the app and asks you to set up again. Don't panic — just tap your setup link and you're straight back in, with all your contacts.

3 Add someone

The only way to add a person is with an invite link. Each link works once, and only for the one person you send it to.

If you can send invites: tap Invite, then share the link with the person (WhatsApp, text, however you like). They tap it, pick a name, and you're connected.

Got sent an invite? Just tap the link. If you're new, you'll pick a name and you're in. If you already use TringTring, tapping it simply adds that person to your contacts.

4 Make a call

Tap the person's name, then tap Call. That's it. When they answer, you can talk.

TringTring is voice only — there's no video, so you don't need to worry about how you look.

5 The little colour bar

During a call you'll see a small bar that tells you how good the connection is:

If it goes red and the call sounds rough, try moving to a spot with better Wi-Fi or signal.

6 Make your phone actually ring

Open Settings in the app and tap Enable ringing on this device, then say yes when your phone asks. Now TringTring can ring you for an incoming call, even when the app is closed.

7 Want to invite people but can't?

Some people can send invites and some can't — it depends on what you've been given. If you'd like to be able to invite others, open Settings and tap Request host access. Whoever runs your group will get the request and can say yes. Once they do, the Invite button appears for you.

8 Your privacy, in plain words

• There's no phone number and no way to search for you.
• Only people you've added can reach you. Everyone else simply can't.
• Your calls are never recorded.
• If you ever fall out with someone, you can remove them and they drop off your list — no drama, no one else affected. Tap the ⋯ next to their name, then Remove contact.
